AFS Students visit Optimist Club
Four AFS students and one of their AFS sponsors shared their past years' experiences and thoughts with the Sauk Prairie Optimist Club on June 20. The students are Joana (Jo) Falcao from Portugal, Romy Muck from Germany, Cecelia Galeotti from Italy, and Marina Ruiz Vera from Spain. The students were presented by Janine Petersen whose family is hosting Jo and Cecelia. One of the things they enjoyed in America was Culver's cheese curds. They also liked the fact that their teachers were very friendly and accessible here. All of the students had participated in one or two sports while they were here and enjoyed being on teams and easily making friends here. Several commented on the snow and cold of winter and the heat this past month. Another aspect about life here they enjoyed was nature. Most of them lived in cities so they enjoyed the sounds and sights of nature outside their windows. Miranda shared that she was shy and it took her awhile to be brave enough to be in a sport and make new friends. She felt she grew a lot in self-esteem this past year. They all thanked Superintendent Cliff Thompson for a fabulous year and also praised Petersen for the job she has done in hosting them in her home and/or being a resource for them. They all head back to their homelands in five days.
The Optimist Club of Sauk Prairie meets on Wednesdays at 7 a.m. (noon the first Wednesday of the month) in the River Room of the Blue Spoon. New members and visitors are always welcome!
